Renovation project of the Municipal Theatre and the Conservatory of Corsica Henri Tomasi

The cultural lung of the city, the Theatre of Bastia and its 8000 m2 of surface in the work located in the city centre, are today the object of a renovation project carried out by the City of Bastia and the Collectivity of Corsica. Dating back to 1879 and renovated in 1981, this emblematic place, trodden by every Bastian and much more, has given a new and contemporary cultural impulse for more than 30 years thanks to its multipurpose functions: hosting shows programmed by the city or by partners, hosting festivals, associative, cultural or other events. The space has the particularity of being able to host multiple artistic disciplines: live shows, cinema, conferences, exhibitions, etc.

Hosting the Bastia branch of the Corsican Conservatory Henri Tomasi, the Theatre is also a space dedicated to learning and artistic and cultural education. Through the richness of its programming and its functions, through the cultural action projects as well as through its singular identity, the Theatre of Bastia is the place for all audiences, for all Bastians and all Corsicans. Through its large-scale artistic stage, unique on our island, the regional influence of this tool no longer needs to be proven.

The three decades that have allowed the Theatre to find its place and its identity in our society and in our territory have tested the place and it is today unimaginable to envisage the cultural future of Bastia without a rehabilitated and renovated tool that meets the requirements of the Bastians. Today, this renovation is fully in line with the impetus given by a territorial project that goes beyond our borders: Bastia Corsica 2028. As the cornerstone of the project to apply for the European Capital of Culture label, the new Theatre of Bastia will be part of a cultural policy project whose strategic dimension is imagined for the whole of Corsica. Representing an identity and a culture, this project is thought of in a global way: territorial, structural and social. The objective is to meet the expectations of the inhabitants, the technical and acoustic issues that will allow for an unprecedented quality of service, and the legal obligations in terms of accessibility, safety and reception of the public, all through a unique and innovative project.

On 4 June 2021, the City of Bastia launched a call for applications at European level called "Restricted competition for project management on the basis of a sketch for the rehabilitation and extension of the Bastia municipal theatre, including the music, dance and dramatic arts conservatory". On the basis of a report from the competition jury which analysed the 3 sketch submissions, the Mayor designated the winning project on 31 May 2022, whose representative is HUITETDEMI, associated architects.
